We love Mr. Speaker.  I hope he is well.

I thought I would send over several updated pictures from this last season of Waylon (Speaker/Daisy Pup).  I included a puppy shot so you can see the transformation.  He is an awesome all around dog.  He nailed his first junior test this fall.  We started training for his senior tests this spring.  Waylon is as steady as can be in the blind, and outruns and outlasts the other dogs when hunting upland.  By the way he and my son are both 2 yrs. old and growing closer everyday. Thanks for a great dog, guys.  Owner: Jeff Petrowski, Brunswick, OH

Scully, my Speaker/Whiskey girl, is now Fireside Special Agent MX MXJ!  She finished her Masters titles this fall, two and a half months shy of her third birthday.  She is athletic and fast, placing in 99% of her qualifying runs, even taking first place (beating all the Border Collies) at a 600 run trial in the competitive 20 inch division.  She is a first class competitive dog and a super house dog and companion.  Thanks to all of you for this amazing girl.  I look forward to competing with her in obedience, and naturally, continuing to run her in Agility.  She can do anything...if I can keep up!  Owner:  Linda Barrett

Topbrass Cut’s Like a Knife “Sabre”, MH, QAA, WCX, MX, MXJ, ADHF, EAC, TN-E, OAJ, OGC, WV-O, TNG-O, CGC is owned by Barb Farrell.

I wanted to tell you the story of my Speaker kid called Chilli (Blazinlake's Olympic Fire). When I got to hear from Speaker first, I knew that he was the stud I'd like a puppy from. Of course to find breeders from overseas (Europe) is not that easy. But I found a litter with Speaker at Blazinlake's kennel and was very happy to get the chance of such a wonderful pup. And it was the best idea I have ever had.

Since Chilli stepped in my life, I am that satisfied with her and training with her is so easy and joyful. In her first year of competing she earned the following honorifics:

1st place in puppy class out of 19 dogs

6th place in novice class out of 54 dogs

3rd place in novice class out of 49 dogs (Qualification for the finals)

3rd place in novice class out of 22 dogs (Qualification for the finals)

4th place in novice class at the Austrian Working Test Finals

We are looking forward to run next year in the intermediate class and get some more good results. The pictures I enclosed show her from puppyhood till now.

Many greetings from Austria and Chilli who will be enjoying the coming hunting season...

Sandhau's Flying Buddy Flinn  CDX  NA  NAJ  CGC:  "Flinn" is my dog out of Speaker.  I did the breeding in 2000 with Speaker and my Breeze and have been thrilled with Flinn.  She is exceptional and versatile.  My 2 legged boy is just 5 months younger than Flinn and we were blessed with the perfect dog to raise him.  She has Speaker's gentle temperament and my son, Ian, could walk Flinn anywhere when they were both only a year old.  She has been easy to train and loves going in a show or going in a boat and beach.    My 13 year old daughter has completely trained Flinn in agility and easily gotten NAJ and NA titles with all first places. The young team cannot wait to competed in on open and excellent in the Fall.  Last spring in a 5 week period, Flinn finished her CD in Novice B with a 195 and 2nd place, finished training for CDX level, got 2 CDX legs with good scores and placements, placed 1st in her first legs of NA and NAJ, and received her 2nd JH leg.  I have trouble with 3 young children finding time to train and compete in hunt tests.  Even though Flinn has had few formal training sessions, she seems a natural, is a fine marker, and has easily gotten 3 JH legs with lots of "nice working dog" comments.  She will continue fieldwork competitions after a break for July 4th puppies.  My 2 legged and 4 legged daughters cannot wait until maternity leave is over so they can continue in agility and of course Flinn and I look forward to UD level in obedience.

I have included photos from her last agility show and a photo which appeared in our local paper of the team of Flinn and Heather.
Her dates of titles are as follows:
CD            April    13,    2004     Finished title with a 2nd place in Novice B and 195
CDX          Jan     23,    2005     Finished title with a 1st place and 195 and HS Golden
NAJ           April    10,    2005    Junior Handled

NA             April    16,    2005    Junior Handled

Lisa Berglund reports on her Speaker/Spice pup:

It was love at first sight. (how could it not be with that cute little face?)

Rosehill's Sweet Talkin' Sugar is an amazing girl.

My friends often say to me "you have the coolest dog in the world." All I can do is nod, knowing that nothing could be more true. Sugar is my rock, and has been right by my side through many difficult times. She has become quite fond of agility. Although we have competed primarily in NADAC trials, we're beginning to compete in AKC as well. Jumpers is definitely her favorite event.

Thank you Lorie Jolly and Susan Weishaar for my amazing girl. And thanks Lorie for encouraging me to get involved in agility!

Gunner competed in the International Working Retriever Test held in Cervina, Italy, July 2-3, 2005.  Visit http://www.working-retriever.com/05inttest/intro.htm for a write-up on the test, or http://www.workingretrieversclub.it/iwt/ for test information and results.

Gunner is shown at right with handler Barbara Campi.

Snap is out of Fireside's Terrible Two's and by Speaker.  He is now three and is working on his OTCh in both AKC and UKC.  He earned his AKC UD with three first places out of Utility B with one High in Trial and two High Combineds.  He earned his UKC UD in one weekend with one first and two second placements and picked up 14 OCH points and one double Q on the way.  He currently has won five HITs and two HCs this year while picking up six new titles!  We hope to complete his Senior Hunter title this fall.  Owner:  Maggie Hayes

Pet therapists spread joy at the Karmanos Cancer Center (reprinted from www.karmanos.org)

The attractive young woman had already spent more time than she could remember being in the hospital. Now she was about to celebrate her nineteenth birthday on the fifth floor of the Karmanos Cancer Center in midtown Detroit. Feeling blue and needing a pleasant distraction, a 54-pound, three-year-old volunteer named Ada came her way. Ada, an auburn haired field retriever, was visiting the Cancer Center with her owner, Heather Dobzyniak. Their visit with Leslie Clemons of Detroit was just as Coordinator of Complimentary Therapies, Kristine Frias had hoped; Ada brought a smile to Leslie’s tired eyes.

Ada and Heather are part of “Tails of Joy,” a new program at the Center. The Tails of Joy program utilizes “pet therapists” to reduce the anxiety of oncology patients in the hospital setting.

Pet therapists are animals that have successfully completed pet therapy training and have met guidelines set forth by Therapy Dogs Incorporated, which was founded by Wyoming residents Jack and Ann Butrick in 1990 and provides registration, support and insurance to volunteers. The objective of Therapy Dogs is to form a network of caring individuals who are willing to share their special animals to bring cheer to patients in a variety of environments. Therapy Dogs has grown into an organization of seven thousand members in the United States, Canada and Puerto Rico. Pet therapists are certified for good health, temperament, people manners and obedience through Therapy Dogs Incorporated.

The goal of Tails of Joy is to provide patients a normal leisure experience while hospitalized.  When patients interact with the dogs, spending time petting and brushing them, they reminisce about their own experiences with pets, recalling positive experiences. That was the effect Ada had on Charlie Hampstead of Parma.  Ada reminded Charlie of a golden lab he had once owned as well as the five cats waiting for him at home. A bit reserved as Ada approached, Charlie soon warmed to the dog’s gentle attention. Ada seemed to know how assertive to be with the patients she visited, adjusting her behavior to the patient’s response.

The patients Ada visited had been referred by the Center’s professional staff and were selected to address any conditions that would be compromised during the visit. Patients or their representative must sign a waver before the pet therapist’s visit.

Ada’s owner, Heather, a nurse herself, said that she and Ada enjoyed their time at the Center. “Bringing Ada to visit the patients here gives me a chance to give a different kind of care” Heather shared. A third patient, Doris was appreciative of the special care that Ada brought. At the end of the dog’s visit, Doris thanked Ada for “making my day.”

In the Metro Detroit area, pet therapists are certified through Dr. Paws, an affiliate of Therapy Dogs Incorporated. For further information go to: www.drpaws.com or contact Dr. Paws by phone at (248) 888-7488.  To view this complete story and photos, visit http://www.karmanos.org/view_news.asp?id=227
